Mental Health Counseling

Alarus counselors meet clients where they are and actively help them make lasting change. Our clinicians work with people facing severe and persistent mental illness, stress, depression, anxiety, child and adolescent concerns, and relationship, marital, or family problems. We support clients without judgment and help them find their own path.

Moreover, Alarus counselors provide therapy and support to individuals and families adapting to life’s changes. We help most clients set goals, adopt the behaviors needed to reach them, and monitor the sequence of actions that lead to success. Everyone revises goals over time; consequently, careers and relationships can be derailed by circumstances beyond one’s control.

Many people come to mental health counselors feeling overwhelmed by stressful jobs that demand juggling work and family responsibilities. Additionally, family obligations—especially raising children while caring for elderly parents—can create intense stress.

Some clients cope with chronic pain, which makes daily life difficult and often requires multiple pain medications that can lead to substance dependence. An estimated 50 million Americans suffer from chronic pain. Therefore, Alarus counselors teach coping strategies, help clients find sources of happiness, and address any substance dependence related to pain medication.

Several of our clinicians specialize in substance abuse and addiction. By meeting clients where they are, we often identify co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders and treat both, since they frequently intertwine.

The right therapist can make a difference

Overall, Alarus mental health counselors support clients through a wide range of difficulties. We listen, provide psychotherapy, and offer informed, objective feedback as caring, sensitive professionals who are not directly involved in clients’ personal lives. As a result, our clinicians help people find greater peace and more satisfying lives.

From teens struggling with self-image, to individuals with anger management issues, to those experiencing recurring suicidal thoughts, Alarus counselors use psychotherapy and other interventions to help clients of all ages.

Addictions Counseling

Our treatment philosophy first recognizes alcohol and drug addiction as a disease and, consequently, embraces abstinence as the most effective way to manage it. Therefore, we treat addiction as a whole-life change and work with clients to implement the components that create a healthy life.

Moreover, people who turn to Alarus bring unique histories and circumstances. Accordingly, we tailor treatment to each person to ensure the most effective approaches and the best chance for recovery. In addition, a client’s alcohol- and drug-treatment plan reflects factors such as family history, the addictive substance(s), gender, physical health, and other individual variables.

Alarus Healthcare specializes in co-occurring disorders. Indeed, many people who struggle with substance use also have mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress disorder. Thus, we include a mental health professional on every care team to identify and treat co-occurring issues alongside addiction.

The right treatment can make a difference

We deliver addiction treatment in different formats to match individual needs. For example, some clients require residential treatment; meanwhile, others complete outpatient programs at our facility. For most people, a combination of services therefore offers the best chance at recovery. Consequently, Alarus provides the full continuum of care and maintains continuity throughout treatment.

Opioid addiction has grown significantly, and as a result Alarus focuses on opioid treatment. During assessment, our team develops a personalized plan to maximize each client’s chance of success. In many cases, clients with opioid addiction see our Medical Director, Dr. Julie Chicks, who helps determine the best course of action. When appropriate, we prescribe medications such as Suboxone or, alternatively, offer Vivitrol injections administered by Dr. Chicks.

Finally, an on-site, multidisciplinary team delivers our alcohol and drug addiction services. That team then builds each individual’s substance abuse treatment plan based on clinical needs.
